Starchy carbohydrates are so wonderful! They make us feel happy, satisfied and energetic, and quite simply, we need them in our diet to provide us with a large proportion of the energy we need to function, and to fuel our organs so that they can function too!
Most people believe that you have to cut carbs if you want to lose weight. After all, if you cut out carbs the scale drops; and when you start eating them again your weight goes back to where you were before, sometimes even higher. Carbs MUST be the enemy for your waistline, right? WRONG!
We’re here to tell you that, contrary to popular belief, that you can eat carbs and lose weight, as well as derive enjoyment when you eat your meals too.
Studies show that carbohydrates are part of the body’s preferred fuel for your brain and muscles, as well as vital organs like the kidneys. Without them, our bodies start to crave energy, which is why we find ourselves snacking on a chocolate or two.
If we don’t get enough carbohydrates and our bodies don’t get the energy they need, our bodies will start getting this energy that we need from elsewhere, breaking down fat and protein instead. Which is not what we want! Eating complex carbohydrates is the best way to maintain our blood sugar levels, which helps us to concentrate and carry out our daily activities.
So forget that fear of carbs and include them in your diet in the right way, every day. What we’ve found is that it is very unrealistic to try and cut out carbohydrates from your diet entirely, Carbs are an essential part of the diet, and can be found in all kinds of foods that you love—even fruits and vegetables!
These little moments of indulgence are healthier than cutting carbs out of your diet, and its way easier to maintain too! No more bunless burgers and zucchini fries! Life is too short for that!
Obviously, we cannot eat pizza and pasta every day and expect to lose weight or maintain weight loss, but there are ways to use these delicious foods to help fuel weight loss, by following three major rules:
Portion control is important
Although we need carbs for fuel, to prevent sugar cravings and certain disease, we often eat way too much of them. A serving or two is all we need! portion size matters.
Ignore any extra’s
Its super important to ignore as many condiments and side sauces as possible! When it comes to carbs, its super easy to add extra’s, however, this takes your carb conscious meal into a not-so-carb conscious meal! Sides, sauces, and extra’s are the parts we need to watch out for the most.
Choose the right carbs
It’s important to recognise that not all carbs are equal. Its most important to ensure you are choosing the right carbs! There are good carbs, and there are BAD carbs. These bad carbs stress your body, trigger cortisol, and increase inflammation which makes fat loss harder, and weight gain easier. These carbs don’t provide the nutrients you need to keep your metabolism running the way it should be, they don’t fill you up, and they end up making you crave more food! BAD CARBS!
